Makeup Kitty shares her secrets: how to look good on camera

Planning to walk the red carpet at the Oscars this year? Recording a YouTube video? Being filmed at a reunion? Whatever your occupation, chances are you will be filmed or photographed, preserving your unique brand of beauty for posterity. Ever wondered why those photos or videos often don’t do you justice? There is a good reason for that. The camera not only adds 15 pounds, but the nasty beast also eats your makeup, leaving you washed out, sallow and yawn-worthy. Why do celebs shine on the red carpet? Because their makeup artists know these secrets. From now on, so will you!

MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER Every flaw is exaggerated in HD. Overly powdery skin will look dead. Shiny non-powdered foundation will look like an oil slick. Your aim? Somewhere in between. Strive for medium coverage that is slightly (VERY slightly) powdered with a large, soft, fluffy brush and skillfully, subtly highlighted with a fan brush. Don’t use anything glittery or wet-looking.
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER Before being filmed or photographed, visit the restroom and blot your T-zone. Forgot to bring along your blotting papers? Don’t panic, just tear off the middle part of the bathroom seat covers, or use a Kleenex. Don’t use more powder over greasy parts of your face, because that will only make them look cakey.
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER Make sure that the color of your foundation matches your neck. If it doesn’t, extend your foundation downward and blend, blend, blend.
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER HD cameras love red lips – so rock your favorite shade of crimson. Otherwise, use any other saturated, juicy color (deep, velvety, rosy pink or purple).
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER Camera (that nasty little monster) loves to eat your blush, so use slightly more than you normally would. To avoid looking like Miss Piggy, use warm, bronzy, neutral tones. Don’t forget to contour and highlight.
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER In choosing your eye make-up, make sure to emphasize your crease. Use a slightly darker palette of colors and don’t forget to use richly pigmented matte black eyeliner. For extra emphasis, use several coats of mascara (you can mix and match your mascaras, using one for length – another one for volume) and line your waterline with a long-lasting kohl/eyeliner.
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER Remember to feature your better side (everyone has one) in facing the camera and try to position yourself so that the camera is slightly above your eye level.
MAKEUP-KITTY-CAT-PAW-PRINT-SMALLER When posing for pictures, just before the shot is taken – concentrate on things that make you smile. Think of your orange tabby cat, your thoughtful boyfriend or your favorite dessert. It will relax your face and lift the corners of your mouth, making your smile look more natural. Getting tired of holding your smile? Turn your head away from the camera for just an instant, then look back, flashing a brand new smile. Years later, when you look at those photos or hit “Play”, instead of cringing, you’ll smile and think, “That was a great day!”
